|2012 Wellington Summer City Festival [Community]|
It’s going to be a long, fun summer in the city with the 2012 Wellington Summer City Festival.
The Summer City Festival is Wellington's summer in the city festival of outdoor fun and entertainment - and with a wide array of events and concerts over three months, there are heaps of reasons to get out and join in the action in Wellington.
Wellington’s sultry, sensational tribute to the warmer months – the Summer City festival – is set to be another scorcher. And for 2012 there are a few changes (mainly experimental) to see whether the three-decade-old festival can be made even more spectacular and popular.
The Summer City programme kicks off slightly later in January, on Wellington Anniversary weekend, and finish when daylight saving ends on 1 April. The Summer City emphasis will also spread more from its Botanic Garden stronghold, with more events on the waterfront and in Island Bay.
Another major change is the ever-popular ASB Gardens Magic Concert Series shifting from mid January to 14-25 March. People will be able to head to the gardens, straight after work, and enjoy an hour and a half of quality music starting at the new time of 7pm, then end the evening with a stroll home through the beautiful Gardens Magic lighting features.

The Wellington Summer City festival will be jam-packed with sizzling events and concerts for the entire city to enjoy this summer.
There is a huge array of music with the ASB Gardens Magic Concert Series in March, bringing you the finest in local and national talent to the Sound Shell in the Wellington Botanic Garden - often referred to as the Botanical Gardens.
ASB is also sponsoring the new Sunset Sessions concerts to be held 3 to 11 March in Shorland Park, Island Bay. This is a chance for families to grab a picnic and get down to the seaside for balmy evenings of music and a possible dip across the road at the beach.
Summer City kicks off on Anniversary Weekend (21-23 Jan) with a busy range of festivals and events including Out in the Square (gay and lesbian fair), Capital E’s Great Scavenger Hunt, the 350 Birdman Competition and the Pasifika Festival.
This year Wellingtonians will notice a stronger harbour theme to our events programme. Some of the highlights include the Waka showcase – with bands and kai – outside the new Wharewaka Te Raukura on Waitangi Day, the Chinese New Year parade on the waterfront and Salsa at Sunset lessons on top of the Band Rotunda in Oriental Bay.
Wellingtonians can even get up close and personal with the crews and yachts from the Global Ocean Race, here until 29 January.
For film buffs, there’ll again be Films by Starlight outdoor screenings in the Dell, in the Wellington Botanic Garden. It’ll again be a mix of classics and new films, with four films screening from 18-26 January.
There will be plenty of thrilling sporting action on offer in Wellington, with the party atmosphere of the 2012 NZ International Sevens at Westpac Stadium from 3-4 February, the AMI Round the Bays Fun Run and the Wellington Dragon Boat Festival in mid March. Cricket fans should note there will also be top quality cricket action at Wellington's Basin Reserve and Westpac Stadium this summer too, with the NZ BLACKCAPS hosting South Africa for three matches in the Capital.
Whatever your tastes, there is something for everyone, and with many events free there is no excuse not to enjoy Wellington this summer. So get up, get out and get dancing with this year's Festival of Fun - Wellington's Summer in the City.
