Last Legs Hall’s latest lot of laughs

Last Legs by Roger Hall, on at Circa until 8 October 2016

A review by Sheridan Bruce

While there were a few oldies dropping off in Last Legs most of the characters had plenty of life in them and were nowhere near being on their last legs! In fact it appeared for some that life was just beginning (again) at the retirement village.

There’s not many Hall plays I haven’t seen. Each one is a time capsule of the era. So relevant at the time of writing and a tremendous socio-political study of New Zealand over the decades. Think Gliding On! One could never think of the public service again without smirking at the thought of men in walk shorts and long socks!

In years to come Last Legs will remind us of the Auckland housing crisis, John Key’s government, the burgeoning growth of retirement villages, the final ‘resting place’ for New Zealand’s white middle class and the ‘hot bed’ of antics behind closed doors.

And what a treat to see New Zealand’s top actors perform to a packed Circa Theatre. I can’t have enough of Ray Henwood, Catherine Downes, Donna Akersten, Vivien Bell, Jane Waddell and Stephen Gledhill. A truly professional cast doing what they do best; performing a Roger Hall play with humour and fun. So entertaining and a great way to spend a night at the theatre.
