Before European habitation and the reclamation of Lambton Harbour, Featherston Street would have
been under the sea just a few metres off the seashore at Lambton Quay. Now the street is well inland
from the current waterfront and is the scene of some of Wellington’s most vigorous commercial
activity.
Featherston Street runs parallel to Customhouse Quay, Lambton Quay and The Terrace. Like The Terrace, it is a
stones-throw from Lambton Quay (shopping) and is a precinct dominated by high-rise office buildings,
hotels and frequent bars, restaurants and cafes.
Featherston Street offers a slightly more relaxed alternative to the retail bustle of Lambton
Quay, yet is handy enough to its attractions. And, on the seaward side, there is always the chance
for an easy stroll on the waterfront, or a more social time at Dockside and Shed 5 on Queens Wharf.
If you’re staying in one of the many hotels on Featherston Street and with time to spare,
consider a relaxing excursion up Wellington’s Cable Car to Kelburn and the Botanic Gardens.
