Wellington Botanic Garden was established in 1868 and is classified as a Garden of National
Significance by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and is a Historic Places Trust
Heritage Area.
The Garden covers some 26 hectares consisting of park areas, native forest, plant collections,
formal gardens, walkways and views over Wellington city and the harbour. It also takes in the
Treehouse Information Centre, the award winning Lady Norwood Rose Garden, (including shop and Picnic
Café), the Sound Shell, Begonia House, Childrens’ Play Area and Duck Pond.
The Botanic Garden is freely open for all to enjoy between sunrise and sunset every day. And
it’s so close to the central city. Take the Wellington
Cable Car, a number 03 Karori bus, or drive or walk to any one of dozens of entrances dotted
around Kelburn including Glen Entrance. One of the
most popular walking routes is from The
Terrace in the central city, through Robertson Way in the Bolton Street Memorial Park, through the Lady Norwood Rose Garden and to the main garden
– this takes about 20 minutes.
The only public car park in the garden area is adjacent to the Lady Norwood Rose Garden off Tinakori Road. Parking is also available along
Glenmore Street near the main entrance and Glen Entrance.
Other areas of interest within the gardens are:
The Dell
Fragrant Garden
William Bramley Drive
