The heart of New Zealand theatre, BATS provides audiences with an exciting, accessible, and
unpredictable live theatre experience almost every night of the year.
Located in the Courtenay Quarter entertainment precinct, BATS encompasses an intimate auditorium
and two cosy bars, providing the perfect night out in downtown Wellington.
BATS is an acronym for the Bane and Austin Touring Society, named after Rodney Bane and David
Austin, the founding members of BATS.
With a commitment to New Zealand productions, BATS has spear-headed the development of new
practitioners and innovative theatre for seventeen years. As the birthplace of cutting-edge, vital,
and internationally acclaimed shows and artists, audiences are given the opportunity to “see it
here first”.
BATS is currently New Zealand's strongest developmental theatre. It has an annual programme of
between 50 to 60 shows with at least 90% of those shows being New Zealand and world premieres. It
constantly seeks to build a new young audience for theatre by presenting diverse, relevant and
challenging theatre.
BATS plays host to key festivals throughout the year including the Fringe Festival, The NZ
International Comedy Festival, Dance Your Socks Off Festival, The Young and Hungry Festival of
Plays, as well as STAB – a theatre revolution. In 2004, BATS was the venue for the first live
recording of Fly My Pretties; the eclectic musical brainchild of Barnaby Weir, front man of the
Black Seeds.
