A stroll along Wellington’s waterfront
opens out into a broad space at Taranaki Street Wharf which can also be access from Frank Kitts
Park, the lagoon, Civic
Square and 1 Taranaki Street.
This is a developing and rapidly evolving part of the waterfront. It already provides pleasant
recreational space right at the water’s edge and access to the Wharewaka and rowing clubs. The new
concepts for public open space in the Taranaki Street Wharf area are designed to further preserve
the heritage aspects and to serve as a play and picnic space.
In recent times, work has been completed in transforming the Odlin building into restaurant,
office and apartment space. Built in 1907 as the head office of timber and building hardware
merchants C and A Odlin, the building is a rare example of Edwardian industrial building
design.
Also in the area is Circa Theatre, a
professional theatre company founded in 1976 and moved to its current site in 1994. The building
contains two performance spaces and a cafe/bar.
Shed 22 sits between the Oldin Building and Circa Theatre and houses Mac’s Brewery Bar & Restaurant. This building
started life as a wharf shed in 1921 but was rendered redundant with the arrival of container
shipping.
