Staglands – 40 Years and Mothers Day
30 April 2012The Barn at Staglands
The Akatarawa Valley road that links Upper Hutt with Waikanae is a very scenic drive or cycle ride and also home to one of the gems of the region – Staglands.
Staglands Wildlife Reserve is celebrating 40 years since opening. John Simister and his partner Sarah Purdy have established an enduring visitor experience that many Wellingtonians have enjoyed as children and again later with their own families.
John and Sarah have just released a special 59 page book called “Staglands – the First Forty Years”, which explains John’s journey from the UK to NZ when he was 22 years old. It also covers his philosophy on what he wanted the reserve to be for the animals and the visitors. Full of the efforts he has made alongside some good humour of many people involved along the way, the book is a revealing and a fitting part of the 40 years celebrations. It is on sale at Staglands Wildlife Reserve (04 526 7529) or at the Upper Hutt i-SITE Visitor Information Centre (tel 04 527 2141) for $12.95.
Sunday 13 May is Mother’s Day and Upper Hutt has plenty on offer for the special day.
Mothers can visit Staglands Wildlife Reserve when accompanied by a paying child or grandchild – just check their website for details.
The Members Stand at Trentham Racecourse will be open on Mothers Day for High Tea from 10am to 5pm. The view over the racecourse from the venue is very pleasant. For only $25 per person you will be able to enjoy a glass of bubbles, a decadent selection of home-style cakes, fresh scones as well as gourmet sandwiches and savouries. Bookings are essential, just call the racecourse office on 04 528 9611.
Silver Stream Railway Heritage Museum is open every Sunday from 11am to 4pm for steam train rides. On Mother’s Day they plan to have their 1877 built steam loco L509 in action and Mums can ride free if accompanied by another fare paying passenger. Check out www.silverstreamrailway.org.nz for full details.
